Are you active through the summer? Need some grade 12 (30 level) credits?

Is Summer School Right for Me?

Summer School Time Commitments and Expectations

Can I go on vacation during summer school?

You can complete summer school anywhere with decent wifi, however, you must show up to your online class daily, have the ability to turn your camera on and commit to working on your coursework everyday! LIVE ATTENDANCE WITH CAMERAS ON IS MANDATORY!

Can I work while I’m taking summer school classes?

  • No, best not to work and focus on summer school. You will not be successful holding a job in the month of July.  Think about it – You are doing in 4 weeks what regular students complete in 17 weeks during a regular semester.
  • This will be your full time job for 1 month – if you want to be successful!

How many courses can I take?

  • Up to 10 credits; 1 core course and maybe 1 additional option class.

I’m in Gr. 12, where will I write my diploma exams and how do I register?

  • On June 25th you will be sent instructions on how to register for your diploma exam.
  • The process is different for students in Edmonton, Calgary and those residing outside of these major centers. Hence, once you receive these instructions, follow the steps as indicated.
  • On your 1st day of Summer School, in your live online class, we go through the instructions again to ensure that every student has registered.

How Do I Register?

  • If you have taken any courses with us this year, use this Google Form to register for summer school.
  • If you are a new student, click here to create a registration account and select either form number 1 (students 19 and under) or form number 2 (Adult student-20+ years of age)
  •  Your registration will be confirmed and Ms. Kourtney will email you a google form with summer school information (pick your courses, pay for registration fee, etc.) within 24 hours.
  • Your Ignite Summer Principals will be in touch regarding next steps, including information about completing the mandatory Getting Ignited Online Orientation course.

Ignite Summer School Formula for Success

Alberta Education has published an Online Guide for Students and Families, which has some excellent considerations for online learners. At Ignite, we believe that learners will be successful if they have the necessary supports in place. High school students and their families play an important role in ensuring that we have identified and provided those supports for success!

A few tips we know, from our experience and the research, will help you be successful:

  • Be your amazing self and connect with your teacher. Knowing them well (and them knowing you) will go a long way to helping you on your road to success.
  • Plan your time, for both school and other activities you enjoy doing.
  • Ask for help whenever you need it. Ask questions. Your teachers really do want to hear from you!

SPECIFIC INFORMATION RELATED TO SUMMER SCHOOL @ IGNITE

  1. All course materials are online. You will not need any books.  ALL the materials can be found in the course.
  2. The courses are not self paced.  There is assigned work every day.
  3. Students are expected to submit their daily work by midnight each day.
  4. Strict Deadlines move students to completion and ultimately academic success.
  5. Students are expected to have their camera and mic on during live classes.
  6. All unit exams on Friday are invigilated, using a locked down proctoring browser/platform with teachers also providing proctoring support.
  7. Reliable wifi, a camera, headset (or speakers), and a microphone are required
  8. You might need to print some materials off or scan some coursework back into digital format.  But most of the work will be online.

More Summer School Tips:

    1. Do not fall behind – summer school is intense and fairly fast paced; it’s hard to catch up if you fall behind
    2. Stay on schedule and submit all of your work everyday.
    3. Attend all live classes and study hall.
    4. Reach out to your teachers whenever you have a question or need help.
    5. Set aside 6 to 8 hours everyday for your school work.  Tell your teachers of any additional accommodations you need at the beginning of the course.

Diploma Exams

Instructions for students:

  1. On June 25th you will be sent instructions on how to register for your diploma exam.
  2. The process is different for students in Edmonton, Calgary and those residing outside of these major centres. Hence, once you receive these instructions, follow the steps as indicated.
  3. On your 1st day of Summer School, in your live online class, we go through the instructions again to ensure that every student has registered.
  4. Any issues and you will be directed to our wonderful admin assistant Kourtney that I mentioned in our intro video.

Course and diploma weightings

Your final course mark is based on 70% course work (teacher-assigned mark), 30% from the diploma exam. Your diploma exam results will appear on myPass approximately three weeks after writing your exam(s).

There are guides and exemplars for diploma exams available on Alberta Education’s “Writing Diploma Exams” website.

High School Exam Resources:

Your teachers at Ignite Centre for eLearning will provide live diploma preparation sessions and materials to help ensure you are well prepared for your exams.

Assessment

Ignite Centre for eLearning is committed to ensuring all students are successful. Fair, consistent, and reliable assessment of student learning is an important part of this commitment. The purpose of our Assessment Guide is to share information about assessment with students, parents/caregivers, and stakeholders in an effort to improve both learning and instruction. Assessments provide teachers information to understand what students know and do not know in relation to course outcomes. This information is then used to guide instruction and provide support for students to achieve their goals.

Our Assessment Guide will help you understand:

  • responsibilities of staff, students and parents/caregivers;
  • how we will tell you about your progress and learning;
  • how we assign grades/marks;
  • how you will be assessed; and
  • the steps we take if your work is plagiarized, missing, or not finished.

We welcome your feedback regarding our Assessment Guide.

General Information about Safety and Security online @ Ignite

During the school day, our secure learning environment requires students to log in with a chrome browser, create a chrome profile and enable the synching of the browser.  We push out extensions to the browser to support learning (like a Read Write Literacy app) and to ensure the integrity of the student digital footprint. Teachers will instruct students  in our orientations how to do this.

We have installed a mandatory browser extension, Student Aware, that will notify administration if students are accessing worrisome websites or engaged in dangerous online activity. Our school will then notify parents. This service is only available if students are using the Ignite email on a synched chrome profile. We will be providing some parent information this year to help parents learn more about setting up computers so children are safe online. More information will come on this topic.

We do ensure that our students understand the importance of not sharing personal information online as well as other important aspects related to digital citizenship/literacy. For more information about keeping your children safe online, see our blog here.
